tonga funerals

*friends and related members bring a small gift for the widow & have their own food & then leave until the actual burial.

*the household of the deceased is supposed to provide a meal to all mourners (someone that attends the funeral).

*closer families bring huge ngatu & other traditional gifts & are supposed to stay for the night vigil.

*the burial itself starts with a church service.

*number of their sermons & therefore the duration of the service is in proportion to the rank of the corpse. after the service everyone parades to the cemetary and close family members often remain for 10 days. after 10 days, female family members cut their hair out of respect.

*food is always put in baskets, woven from coconut palm fronds(a large leave).
